My flute teacher told me to practise making the top notes sounds warmer by dropping my jaw (to open my throat and make the sound fuller) but still keeping my lips tight. At first I found it impossible, but now with a long note I can do it. How can you do it when you first start the note? Any tips?Flute- how to drop your jaw and keep your lips pursed?
HI bob... :) I have a trick for you that alot of flute teachers try with their students... (Flute Teacher, Here). Cut a piece of carrot about 1/2 inch in a cube shape and put it between your back molars. This is going to widen your mouth and force you to lower your jaw. If I/2 inch seems a little too large, shave it down just a tad.. but not too much as you are trying something new.. and it will not feel right to you, whether you have a carrot between your teeth or nothing... at least the carrot will keep your jaw from inching upward. You are going to have to do this for weeks until it seems more comfortable and natural to keep your jaw lowered. My suggestion comes from a long line of professional flute teachers so I have an good idea that if you use it, it will help. Thanks for reading and Happy Tooting.Flute- how to drop your jaw and keep your lips pursed?
Hey!! Okay--I hear the same thing all the time! To practice-close your mouth and put your lips in the ';tight position';. Then try keeping your lips and stretching your chin down, like you're making your face longer. After you get the hang of that, try it on w/ the flute. Good luck!!
