Why did my lips suddenly become so flaky and dry?

I have been using Aquaphor (a petroleum jelly) thing on my lips as chapstick for a couple years. For some reason, recently, my lips are always dry and peeling except for a few minutes after I rub them with the bristles of a toothbrush. I don't understand why it just started happening now?Why did my lips suddenly become so flaky and dry?
it sounds gross, and its just a guess, but it might just be mucus from your mouth. It happens to me when my mouth is dry or i havent been drinking enough, regardless of how much chapstick i apply. But for me i only notice it when i wake up, after i brush it off im good to go until the next morning. So if you get it after youve applied chapstick idk.Why did my lips suddenly become so flaky and dry?
Lack of moisture in the air? Some toothpaste has a way of drying your lips, I think.
